Unit 5

Unit 5 is typically a five-week unit taught from March to May.

Unit Overview

Mathematics is a tool used to solve problems in everyday life. In this unit, students develop measurement skills and explore transformational geometry. The many practical applications of measurement enable students to make connections among number and geometry concepts and operations.
Throughout the elementary grades, students learn to measure with increasing precision. They use measurement models to investigate whole number operations. In this unit, students apply what they have learned about measurement to multi-step problems. They develop a formula for volume based on the formulas they have previously developed for area and perimeter.
In Grade 4, students analyzed and described transformations. They identified lines of reflection and points of rotation and described translations as horizontal or vertical. Students in Grade 5 will describe rotations by degrees and identify transformations in patterns (tessellations).
