Mathematics Middle School

MCPS middle school mathematics develops confident mathematical thinkers who can make sense of complex problems, communicate their reasoning, make connections across mathematical concepts, and apply their learning in new situations.

Students engage in rigorous, grade-level mathematics aligned with the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards. Instruction develops conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning while preparing students for success in increasingly advanced mathematics.

Our Mathematics Curriculum

MCPS uses Amplify Desmos Math as its core mathematics curriculum in Grades 6–8 and Algebra 1.

Amplify Desmos Math provides students with opportunities to:

• Make sense of challenging mathematical problems
• Develop conceptual understanding and procedural fluency
• Explain and justify their mathematical reasoning
• Compare strategies and learn from the thinking of others
• Make connections among mathematical representations and concepts
• Apply mathematics to meaningful and real-world situations
