Explore High School Possibilities!

It’s an exciting time to be part of Montgomery County Public Schools. In addition to the highly engaging and rigorous programming offered at a student’s local high school- MCPS will launch a new expanded model for program access with numerous specialized Center programs from five thematic areas and opportunities for additional dual enrollment options through Middle College*. The five themes are: Medical Science; International Baccalaureate, Humanities, & Languages; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); Leadership & Public Service and Visual & Performing Arts.

*Middle College is dependent on a partnership with Montgomery College.

What’s the Next Step?

All Grade 8 students are assigned a home school for high school in Grade 9. For the 2027-2028 school year, each high school will be part of a region (4-5 high schools) that hosts 15 or more specialized programs called Centers with limited central stop transportation. There is an admission process for Centers that includes two rounds: the initial application is Round 1 with an additional opportunity in Round 2. To get families ready for the high school planning process, students will participate in the High School Possibility Process (HSP) beginning in September. Visit the timeline for more information.

MCPS is implementing a six-region high school center program model beginning in 2027–28 to expand access, increase opportunities, and ensure all students have additional high-quality programs closer to home.

The regional model offers 5 program themes available in all regions beginning in 2027-2028. Each theme offers various programs such as cybersecurity, theater, critical language and many more.
