IB Core Curriculum Briefs

 


The Curriculum of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program consists of

A.  Theory of Knowledge course (Two classes – TOK I and TOK II)
B.  Guided Research class resulting in production of 4000 word Extended Essay
C.  150 hours of Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) activities, and
D.  Coursework in six Subject Groups:

 Subject Group 1 – English:
     Two 1-year courses: IB English 1A, IB English 2A, IB English 2BIB English 1 Course Outline, and IB English 12 Fall AIB English 12 Fall BIB English 12 Spring 

 Subject Group 2 – Foreign Language:
     Two years of one IB level language: IB French 5, IB French 6 & 7IB Spanish 5IB Spanish 6IB Spanish 7,

     IB Chinese 3, 4, 5IB Chinese 6A/7A , IB Italian 5, 6 & 7 or IB Arabic 3IB Arabic 4  

 Subject Group 3 – Study of the Individual in Society:
     2-year course in IB European History 1 and IB European History 2 

Subject Group 4 – Experimental Sciences:
     Choice of one of the following:
        1 year IB Chemistry        2 years IB Physics 1 and IB Physics 2  or

        1 year double-period  IB Biology (12th grade only)
        1 year IB Environmental Systems 

Subject Group 5 - Mathematics:   

    IB Mathematics placement is determined by the 10th grade math course level:
     1. Students who have completed 10th grade Honors Pre-calculus or above take AP Calculus BC followed by IB Mathematics HL              

     2. Students who have completed 10th grade Honors Algebra 2 take Honors Precalculus followed

by IB Math SL     

    3. Students who have completed Algebra 2 or Honors Geometry take Honors Algebra 2 or Precalculus followed by  Math Studies SL.

Subject Group 6 – Arts and Electives:
     Choice of one of the following:
        2 years IB Art and DesignIB Art Rubric        

        2 years IB Film – IB Film 1IB Film 2       

        1 year IB Music
        1 year  IB Psychology 

        1 year IB Social/Cultural Anthropology 

 Instead of a Group 6 subject, students may choose a second IB foreign language (2 years) or a second IB experimental science (1 or 2 years) as designated in Subject Group 4.
