Montgomery County Public Schools
(MCPS) includes twenty-five high schools ranging from
575 to over 2600 students. The total enrollment for
the school system exceeds 139,000 students. The high
school athletic program consists of twenty-one varsity
and ten junior varsity teams per school competing in
sixteen sports, in addition to cheerleading and pompons.
The Montgomery
County Public Secondary Schools Athletic
Association, MCPSSAA, the governing body of MCPS
athletics, is composed of the principals of the twenty-three district
high schools. The association regulates the interscholastic
program. The association reports to the Chief Operating
Officer of MCPS and is administered by Dr. William
G. Beattie, the Director of System-wide Athletics.
Each MCPS high school has an athletic director who
supervises and administers the local school athletic
school program. All coaches are hired at the local
school level. Prospective coaches should read our
New coach pages for information and then contact
the local
high school athletic director for specific coaching
vacancies. Due to the rapid increase in all high
school athletics, officials are needed for all
sports, check
the Officials information page to see how you can
help.
The athletic program is operated under the regulations of
the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association, MPSSAA. The MPSSAA
is comprised of over 100,000 athletes, 188 member schools, and is divided into
nine districts. The MPSSAA hosts twenty-three state tournaments.
