Unit 4

Unit Overview

In this unit, students extend their knowledge of rational functions to those functions whose denominator is a polynomial of degree greater than 1. Rational functions are analyzed as transformations of the parent function f (x) = 1/x . Rational equations and their applications are solved numerically, graphically, and algebraically. Honors students analyze graphs of rational functions using limit theory. Rational functions include those whose graphs contain removable discontinuities or contain asymptotes that are neither vertical nor horizontal. Honors students write equivalent expressions for rational functions using partial fraction decomposition and solve rational inequalities.
