MONTGOMERY COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Dr. Thomas W. Taylor is superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools, where he oversees 211 schools with more than 155,000 students and 25,000 staff, in the 15th largest school system in the nation. He began his tenure on July 1, 2024.
Dr. Taylor is the first alumni superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools to complete their entire K–12 schooling in Montgomery County and graduate from MCPS. With more than 25 years of service in public education as a social studies teacher, coach, high school principal, and district leader, Dr. Taylor also previously served as the superintendent in two other school districts prior to returning to Montgomery County.
Dr. Taylor is a highly decorated educational leader, having been named Virginia’s Region III Superintendent of the Year twice - in 2024 for Stafford county and in 2016 for Middlesex county. He is also the recipient of the University Council for Educational Administration’s National Award for Excellence in Educational Leadership in 2020. He was recognized by Virginia Wesleyan University with their Alumni Service Award in 2013 and the University of Virginia recognized him with their Outstanding Principal Alumni Award in 2012 as well as the William H. Seawell Memorial Award in 2008.
Throughout his career, Dr. Taylor has focused on post-secondary readiness, student well-being, and effective teaching. He has led several strategic plan developments and implementations, legislative initiatives, and program enhancements. Dr. Taylor is active in several professional organizations and serves on numerous community boards, including The College Board's superintendent advisory council.
Dr. Taylor holds a Bachelor of Arts from Batten University (previously Virginia Wesleyan University), a Master's in Educational Leadership and a Doctorate in PK–12 Education Policy from the University of Virginia, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the College of William & Mary's Raymond A. Mason School of Business.
He and his wife, Sue, are the proud parents of five children.
