Comprehensive Health Education in Grade 1

Comprehensive health education standards and performance indicators are integrated throughout the elementary school experience. Grade 1 teachers implement a variety of health education learning activities to promote and practice wellness skills and strategies.

Key Concepts

  • Mental and emotional health - discuss the role of eye contact and tone of voice to enhance communication; examine emotions and responses; explain good choices and decision-making criteria (safe, respectful, legal, and parent approved)
  • Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs - identify the appropriate uses of medicines; describe the physical effects and harms to the body from tobacco products and alcohol use
  • Personal and consumer health - identify health service providers in the community; discuss health issues created by pollution; explain how to improve dental health
  • Family life and human sexuality - describe special traits of your family; identify the process of growth (height and weight)
  • Safety and injury prevention - describe how to call 911 and tell an adult in an emergency; identify the characteristics of a bully; discuss pedestrian safety; expalin telling vs. tattling; list fire safety rules to exit the classroom; disucss safety around animals; identify kitchen safety strategies; identify ways to stay safe around strangers
  • Nutrition and fitness - define physical fitness; explain the sequence of food production from seeds to consumer; explain how animals provide food; identify the relationship between the 5 senses (see, hear, touch, taste, smell) and food choices
  • Disease prevention and control - describe ways to prevent the spread of germs; identify ways to stop germs from entering your body
