Student Transition Day Returns – Monday, Aug. 24

Student Transition Day is coming up Monday, Aug. 24. This marks the second year MCPS will kick off a new school year with Transition Day, a full-day initiative in the 2026–2027 calendar designed to ease the transition for students entering new school levels or buildings by fostering belonging, familiarity, and preparedness before all students return to school. Your school will provide more information on Transition Day later this summer. The first day of school for all students is Tuesday, Aug. 25. 

What is the goal of Student Transition Day? Student Transition Day is a non-instructional school day focused on helping students adjust to new school environments, routines and expectations. Students will get a head start on navigating their new school. They will meet principals and teachers, tour the building, practice routines and connect with classmates before the official first day of school on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Who should attend Student Transition Day?

• All students entering Grades K, 6, and 9.
• Incoming Grade 3 students in intermediate schools (Chevy Chase ES, Cresthaven ES, North Chevy Chase ES, Oak View ES, Pine Crest ES).

What if my student is new to the school but isn't in one of the designated transition grades? Individual schools may offer alternative schedules for students who are new to the school but are not in one of the designated transition grades. These schedules are designed to address each school's unique needs. Families should reach out to their student’s school with questions or for more information. Students are welcome to attend for the full day.

What’s the schedule? Transition day is a full school day. Each school creates its own schedule tailored to its community. Your school will provide more information on Transition Day.

What can students expect during Transition Day?

• All students: Practice arrival and dismissal routines, learn school expectations and the Student Code of Conduct, and attend optional parent/guardian information sessions.
• Elementary school: Tour the school, meet teachers and administrators, participate in icebreaker activities, and get a preview of specials.
• Middle school: Explore class schedules, practice using lockers, log in to technology platforms, and learn about athletics, clubs, and other activities through student-led tours.
• High school: Explore class schedules and transitions, discover athletics and extracurricular opportunities, and learn about student rights, responsibilities, and available supports.

What’s the difference between Transition Day and an Open House?

• Transition Day is for students, held during the school day.
• Open House is for families, usually in the evening.

What about transportation? Buses will operate on the regular first-day-of-school schedule. Schedules will be found here (Routes for the 2026–2027 school year will be posted by school in mid-August).

Will meals be available onsite? Lunch will be available free of charge, or students can pack their own lunch.
