Galway Elementary Celebrates Girls in STEM at “Beautifully Smart Gala”
Galway Elementary School recently hosted its “Beautifully Smart Gala,” a special evening celebrating fifth grade girls and their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). More than 100 students and their chaperones attended the semi-formal event, which transformed the school into a space
for connection, inspiration and celebration.
The evening began with a social hour and photo opportunities, followed by dinner and live music from Ella Bleiweis and the MOCO Girls in Jazz Combo from Walt Whitman High School.

Maria Mauras, STEM teacher at Galway and the organizing committee shared remarks about the importance of encouraging girls to pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math, encouraging the students to think about both the “what” and the “why” behind their learning.
The event also featured a keynote address from Dr. Kameron J. King, a chemist and founder of BlackGirlScientist, LLC., an organization dedicated to advancing girls and women in STEM fields.

The gala highlighted Galway’s commitment to empowering young learners and creating opportunities for students to see themselves represented in STEM careers and leadership roles.
