Living Heritage: Preserving Traditions, Supporting Families at Vien An Temple

What does it mean to be a "bridge" for your neighbors? To kick off our celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, we invite you to watch the first episode of our new series, Living Heritage.

Board of Education Member Julie Yang visits Vien An Temple to explore how the Vietnamese community preserves its rich history right here in Montgomery County. From weekend language classes to providing a "24/7" support system for families in need, discover how this local landmark fosters a culture of compassion, mindfulness, and mutual respect. It’s a beautiful look at how these traditions help our students and families stay grounded in the present moment.

Pulse of Culture | Dance, Heritage & Community in Montgomery County

Dance is more than movement. It is history, identity, and connection. In Pulse of Culture, Montgomery County Board of Education Member Julie Yang explores how dance helps preserve traditions and strengthen communities across generations. Through the vibrant traditions of Kuchipudi from India, Hula from Hawai‘i, and Chinese Lion Dance, families and performers share how culture continues to thrive far from its place of origin. From ancient stories passed down through movement to the joy of performing for a new generation, these traditions connect people to their heritage while building community here in Montgomery County. Join us as we celebrate the artists, teachers, students, and families who keep culture alive through music, dance, and storytelling.
