The Meaning of Summer RISE

The Montgomery County Public Schools Department of Partnerships rebranded and updated the Summer RISE logo and meaning of R.I.S.E. in 2021. Current and previous Summer RISE students were eligible to submit entries to design a new logo for Summer RISE and/or capture the true meaning behind their Summer RISE experience by defining the acronym “R.I.S.E.”

Reimagining an Innovative Student Experience

by Ashley Sludd

Each Summer RISE experience is unique, just as every student participating is unique in what they want to get out of the program. Rising MCPS juniors and seniors are able to gain experience in a career field of their choosing, and can see the daily tasks that occur. Summer RISE truly can be catered towards each student, and will leave a lasting impact on all of those who participate, both the hosts and students. It is so much more than a “job,” or “internship,” but rather an experience that will enable students to thrive inside and outside of the workplace.

MCPS Summer RISE - Logo

This logo combines the following elements:

  • a sun(rise)
  • a graduation cap
  • a mountain
  • an arrow
  • holding/shaking hands

All of which symbolizes the Summer RISE Program as an opportunity for students to grow, become a better version of themselves, and meet new people.

The sun rising out from behind the mountain is inspired by the name itself, “Summer RISE." The mountain is a representation of the obstacles we all must overcome on our path to success. It also consists of an arrow pointing upwards, which conveys the idea of growth and “reaching new heights.” The arrow is then broken up into two bent lines, which together, symbolizes two people shaking or holding hands. This goes back to the idea that Summer RISE is a great way for students to meet new people in areas they’re interested in. Finally, the graduation cap on the sun not only informs that this is an opportunity for students, but it also creates the analogy that students are the ones rising up and bringing light into this world.

Registering for Summer RISE

Before Registering

  1. Create a private email for hosts to contact you about your participation in the Summer RISE 2024 program.
  2. Verify that you have read the Summer RISE 2024 Student Agreement.
  3. Confirm permission from your parent/guardian to participate in Summer RISE. Your parent/guardian should read the Summer RISE 2024 Parent/Guardian Agreement prior to you registering.
  4. Confirm that you will be available from June 24 through July 26, between 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The program will be five weeks long (50 hours) and hosts will determine your schedule, the number of weeks and your hours.
  5. It is recommended that you complete the Naviance Career Interest Profiler and the Career Cluster Finder to help identify career industries of interest to inform the experiences you wish to seek this upcoming summer.
    • If you need help accessing these resources in Naviance, please see your school counselor or College/Career Information Coordinator (CCIC).

  1. Determine your top three career areas of interest, geographic preferences and virtual/in-person opportunities in order of preference. Program acceptance will be based on industry availability, type of program offering and geographical region. While program organizers cannot guarantee that all preferences will be met, the program seeks to place students with an organization that will teach professional skills that can be used in multiple employment settings.
  2. Summer RISE program organizers will email students in May to make them aware of when they should start reading their email daily.
  3. Students will learn about their acceptance and name of their host and location in April/May. The host will determine the schedule with their student.
  4. Students will be placed with a business or organization that matches their career interest.
  5. If you are accepted into the program, you will need to attend a mandatory workshop on professional skills and financial literacy and join the Summer RISE Canvas classroom.
