Central High School Summer School Program


About the Central Program

Locations

  • Entirely virtual
  • Synchronous sessions will take place through Zoom
  • Asynchronous work will be completed on either Edmentum or Canvas

Dates

  • Session 1: June 26-July 16 (No class on July 4)
    Required Synchronous Days: June 26, June 28, July 1, July 3, July 8, July 10, July 12, July 16
    Option Synchronous Support Days: June 27, July 2, July 5, July 9, July 11, July 15
  • Session 2: July 18-August 6
    Required Synchronous Days: July 18, July 22, July 24, July 26, July 29, July 31, August 2, August 6
    Option Synchronous Support Days: July 19, July 23, July 25, July 30, August 1, August 5

Instructional Experience

Students will be required to attend eight, one hour fifteen-minute virtual, synchronous instructional sessions per session, for a total of 10 synchronous hours.

Students should plan to spend between 30 and 40 additional hours per session completing asynchronous work in each course.

Asynchronous work will be completed in one of two platforms:

  • Canvas
    • Health, technology courses
  • Edmentum
    • All other courses

Calendar

  • March 22: Registration begins
  • May 1: Non-MCPS registration opens
  • May 31: Registration ends for Session 1 courses–no changes to course selection permitted after this date for Session 1 courses
  • June 26: First day of classes for Session 1
  • June 30: Registration ends for Session 2 courses–no changes to course selection permitted after this date for Session 2 courses
  • July 16: Last day of Session 1 courses
  • July 18: First day of Session 2 courses
  • August 6: Last day of Session 2 courses
  • August 12: Summer Graduation Rehearsal - Wheaton HS, 10:00 a.m.
  • August 13: Summer Graduation - Wheaton HS, ceremony at 1:00 p.m.

Tuition

Tuition Waiver Level 2 $0 - $39,000 $102
    • School Cash Online is the preferred payment method
    • A 4% service fee, reflected in the costs above, are added to each invoice
    • After a student’s school counselor reviews and approves the courses for which you have registered your student, parents/caregivers will receive an invoice through School Cash Online with payment instructions.
    • Parents and caregivers who are not registered with School Cash Online will receive a direct link to pay.
    • Parents and caregivers can make in-person payments for summer school, cash or money order only (exact amount only), at CESC, 850 Hungerford Dr., Rockville, MD 20850. The last day to make in-person payments is Monday, July 8 from 9:00am - 3:00pm.
    • Payments must be received 10 days before the first class meeting, or students will not be enrolled in course.
    • Full or partial refunds may be made for students who attend class for the first 5 days of a session or less. A parent/guardian must request the refund prior to the refund deadline (Session 1: July 3; Session 2: July 24).

Course List

Please note the following when registering:

  • Hon Health Education A and Hon Health Education B may not be taken in the same session. Students may take Hon Health Education A in session 1 and Hon Health Education B in session 2.
  • English, World Language, and state-tested subjects (Algebra 1, Biology, and NSL) may not be taken for original credit.
  • Rising 9th graders may only take courses in the following contents:
    • Health
    • Technology
    • Fine Arts
    • Math–with express approval from student’s middle school math team

Class Schedule

All courses in the content area occur at the same time. For example, the synchronous meetings for English 9A and English 10A both occur at either 8:00-9:15 am or 2:15-3:30 pm.
