Math 6 (Math A) Unit 3 Resources

Unit Overview

The study of geometry helps students represent and make sense of the world. Spatial visualization and problem solving, as well as formal definitions and axioms, are integral parts of geometry. In this unit, students use diagrams, manipulatives, and real world situations to investigate the properties of basic geometric shapes and to solve problems.

Students gain an understanding of the relationship of angle pairs. They measure angles to verify relationship properties. As students learn to classify angle pairs, they use the language associated with them. Students classify triangles and quadrilaterals by identifying relationships among their properties. Diagonals are used to find the sum of the measures of angles in polygons. By combining and dividing shapes, students develop an awareness of properties of shapes including the sum of the measure of interior angles of quadrilaterals and triangles. Students develop an understanding of congruence and similarity of shapes. Students represent and analyze translations, reflections, and rotations on the coordinate plane.

Students find areas of common shapes, including circles, by counting, combining and dividing shapes, and measuring, progressing to the use of standard formulas. They discover the relationship between the diameter and the circumference of a circle and develop an understanding of π as a constant.

Students visualize, describe, and represent two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional objects, using geometrical language. They make two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional shapes and models of three-dimensional shapes from two-dimensional representations.

Instructional Flow

Unit 3 is typically a seven-week unit taught in February and March.
