Dr. Genevieve Floyd Honored for Dual-Enrollment Work
Dr. Genevieve Floyd, director of the Division of Career and Postsecondary Partnerships and Career Advising, has received a Governor’s Citation for her work with the dual-enrollment program.
Dr. Elena Saenz, associate senior vice president for academic partnerships and programs at Montgomery College (MC), was also honored for her role with the program.
In MCPS, dual-enrollment students are dually enrolled in an MCPS high school and a postsecondary institution of higher learning. Students from any high school can participate. There are a total of 22 degrees available in all of the degree programs, which now include Middle College, Early College, P-TECH and Virtual Middle College. Students earn an associate degree or an associate of applied science.
In 2014, the Middle College program launched with a handful of students at Northwood and Northwest high schools. In 2018, the program graduated eight students. By Fiscal Year 2021, the degree graduates grew to 125. Just two years later, the number soared to 276, the most in Maryland. This past spring, 268 high school students graduated with a college degree from MC—again the most in Maryland.
“We have so many opportunities for students to graduate with a degree and it’s free,” said Dr. Floyd. “It saves students time; it saves parents money. These are some of the reasons for the tremendous growth.”
“A lot of great work has been done over the last 10 years. None of it would have happened without MC and our respective institutional leaders,” said Dr. Floyd. “They have been so open to innovation, extremely supportive and collaborative in figuring out how to best serve our students and enable them to get a jump start on their postsecondary plans.”
