Montgomery County Public Schools 10-month employees who retire on July 1, 2024, August 1, 2024, or September 1, 2024, will maintain their employee benefits coverage through September 30, 2024. If retiring 10-month employees opt to enroll in the MCPS retiree benefits plan, that coverage will go into effect on October 1, 2024.

The rules for Medicare will not change for these new retirees. If you are a 10-month employee planning to retire in July, August, or September, and if you or your dependent becomes eligible for Medicare between July 1 and September 1, you must begin the Medicare application process on July 1, which is three months before your October 1 Medicare effective date.

Since these retirees will still be covered by their employee benefits plan through September 30, 2024, they cannot begin the Medicare enrollment process until July 1, 2024, for a Medicare Part B effective date of October 1, 2024.

In early June 2024, the Employee and Retiree Service Center (ERSC) will mail all required documents to Medicare-eligible retirees and/or their dependents so they may begin the process of enrolling in Medicare Parts A & B.
