Overview

The Summer Online Pathway to Graduation program is designed for MCPS high school students who are in need of additional credits to meet graduation requirements.

In this program, students will work to complete up to four semester courses in seven weeks; six weeks for seniors expecting to participate in the 2020 summer graduation. In contrast to summer school classes, these classes are not condensed and students should expect to spend a significant amount of time per day on coursework.

Current Offering

Monday, June 22, 2020, to Thursday, August 6, 2020 (Seven weeks; six weeks for seniors expecting to participate in the 2020 summer graduation).

Mandatory student orientation – TBD

  • During orientation, students will receive a password and username for accessing the online platform.
  • The orientation presentation will review the attendance requirements in addition to assignment due dates and deadlines.
  • Students must attend orientation in order to participate in the program.

Courses Offered

English:

  • English 9 A/B, English 10 A/B*, English 11 A/B, English 12 A/B

Math:

  • Algebra 1 A/B*, Algebra 2 A/B, 2Yr Algebra 2 A/B, 2Yr Algebra 2 C/D, Geometry A/B, Precalculus A/B, Quantitative Literacy A/B, Statistics A

Science:

  • Biology A/B*, Environmental Science A/B, Physical Science A/B

Social Studies:

  • Modern World History A/B, NSL Government A/B*, U.S. History A/B

World Languages:

  • French 1 A/B*, Spanish 1 A/B*, Spanish 2 A/B*

* Courses that can only be taken to replace a failing grade or for the purpose of grade improvement.

Program Requirements

  • Attend a mandatory orientation (date and time TBD).
  • Students must check-in on a weekly basis at their chosen support center (Bethesda-Chevy Chase HS, Gaithersburg HS, Northwest HS, Springbrook HS, Walter Johnson HS, Wheaton HS) and work for at least one hour. Students who miss two check-ins are removed from the program.
    • The support centers will be open for teacher support and testing from 4 pm to 7 pm MONDAY through THURSDAY.
    • The support centers follow the MCPS calendar for holiday closings.
  • Students will need reliable access to the internet with either a laptop or desktop computer.
  • Students may enroll in up to two half-credit (0.5 credit) courses.
  • Students who are enrolled in multiple courses must take a unit test in each course every week.
  • Students enrolled in the program should plan to work a significant amount of time per day to meet the goal of course completion by August 6.
  • The last day for the program for students who wish to participate in summer graduation is July 30, 2020. For all other students, the last day for the program is August 6, 2020. Students who do not complete a course by the last day may enroll in the Online Pathway to Graduation (OPTG) program during the school year to complete any unfinished coursework.
