A POS plan combines features of an HMO and an indemnity plan. You receive care in one of two ways. There is an in-network HMO-like component offering a full range of services provided or authorized by your primary care physician or by an in-network specialist. In addition, there is an out-of-network component similar to traditional indemnity insurance.

A health maintenance organization (HMO) plan offers a full range of services provided or authorized by your PCP or by an in-network specialist. You may only receive benefits for medical services and supplies received from a network provider, except in a true emergency.
