Standard

Maryland State Curriculum Content Standard 2:  Students will demonstrate the ability to use drug knowledge, decision-making skills, and health enhancing strategies to address, the non-use, use, and abuse of medications, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

Performance Indicators

A. Medicine 
 2.3.A.1.  Identify safe practices for using prescription and Over the Counter (OTC) drugs.   

2.3.A.1.a.

Identify prescription and OTC drugs.  

2.3.A.1.b.

Explain the importance of following directions when using medicines or other substances.  

2.3.A.1.c.

List and describe appropriate uses for prescribed and OTC drugs.  
B. Tobacco 
 2.3.B.1.  Identify and examine physical consequences of the use of tobacco.  

2.3.B.1.a.

Recognize that tobacco products contain nicotine.  

2.3.B.1.b.

Identify forms of tobacco, such as smoke or smokeless.

2.3.B.1.c.

Describe the effects of tobacco use and non-use, including second-hand smoke, on the body.  

2.3.B.1.d.

Demonstrate a personal commitment not to use tobacco.
D. Caffeine 
2.3.D.1.  Identify caffeine as a drug.  

2.3.D.1.a.

List products that contain caffeine.

2.3.D.1.b.

Suggest alternative products which do not contain caffeine.
