Unit 5

Unit Overview

In this unit, students extend previous knowledge from Algebra 1 regarding exponential functions. Students investigate exponential functions numerically, algebraically, and graphically. Percent increases and percent decreases are applied to introduce students to the ratios that exist among the values in exponential functions. Students have the opportunity to engage in activities that involve real-world applications of exponential functions. Properties of exponential functions, including transformations, characteristics of growth versus decay, horizontal asymptotes, half-life, and doubling time are explored. Students differentiate between growth and decay rates and growth and decay factors in real-world contexts. Negative exponents in exponential functions are explored within real-world applications. Students determine appropriate exponential regression models and interpolate and extrapolate data based on those models.
