Unit 1 is typically an eight-week unit taught in September and October.
Mathematics is the study of patterns and relationships. In this unit, students analyze and apply numeric and statistical patterns and relationships.
Students begin the unit by investigating place value. In Grade 2, students applied place value concepts to compare and order numbers to 1,000. In Grade 3, students expand their understanding to include numbers to 10,000. The idea that numbers can be represented in a variety of ways promotes the flexible thinking students need to understand how regrouping numbers facilitates addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers.
In this unit, students build on their prior knowledge that data is collected, displayed, and analyzed to answer questions. Students in Grade 3, explore how scales on graphs can be adjusted to accommodate larger data sets. They compare and interpret data found in tables and graphs – including double bar graphs.
The concept that numbers can be combined and taken apart in a variety of ways is a foundational understanding for addition and subtraction. Prior to this year, students added multi-digit numbers with regrouping and explored alternative strategies for subtraction with regrouping. In Grade 3, students investigate how various algorithms can be used to subtract multi-digit numbers with accuracy and efficiency.
