Mr. Philip Kauffman is serving his second term as a member of the Board of Education. He served as president in 2014 and vice president in 2013. He is the chair of the Board's Policy Management Committee and a member of the Fiscal Management committee.
Mr. Kauffman was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE) in 2014. In addition, Mr. Kauffman was appointed by Governor O'Malley to serve on the statewide Professional Standards and Teacher Education Board in 2014.
Mr. Kauffman retired in 2013 after serving as Deputy Assistant General Counsel with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). He supervised a national staff of attorneys responsible for providing legal support to the VA's health care and information technology acquisition program.
Prior to joining the Board, Mr. Kauffman served for more than 13 years as an elected local and county PTA leader. He has served on the Montgomery County Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (MCCPTA) Board of Directors as the Area Vice President for the Sherwood Cluster and Northeast Consortium. He has been a MCCPTA Blake Cluster Coordinator and Farquhar Middle School PTA President. In May 2007, he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership to the Maryland PTA.
Mr. Kauffman received a degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from the University of Maryland. He is married with two daughters who graduated from MCPS.
