Staff are encouraged to talk to students about attending two upcoming college events—the HBCU College Fair and Junior Day.

The 16th Annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) College Fair is a free, in-person event set for Friday, Feb. 16 from 6–8:30 p.m. at The Universities at Shady Grove. It is open to students in Grades 8–12 and will provide them an opportunity to meet representatives from more than 50 HBCUs, who will share information and answer questions about admissions, financial aid, testing and majors.

This event will also feature a college preparation workshop for middle school students and parents, a discussion on college life, help with completing the FAFSA and scholarship information. The HBCU College Fair is co-sponsored by MCPS and the Montgomery County Chapter of the NAACP.

Students and parents/guardians must register to attend. Students may earn three Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for attending at least two workshop sessions during the fair and completing an SSL form that will be provided to participants after the event.

For more information, students should contact the College and Career Coordinator at their school or Dr. Karen Crews, director of Student Well-Being and Achievement.

In addition, in partnership with the NAACP Parents’ Council and Johns Hopkins University, MCPS will host a Junior Day event from 9:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29 at Wheaton High School, 12401 Dalewood Drive in Silver Spring. This event is for rising minority seniors to learn about scholarships, financial aid, the admission process and interviews. Buses, breakfast and lunch will be provided. Register.
