Progress Monitoring

What is Progress Monitoring?

Progress Monitoring is an assessment tool designed to help teachers determine a student’s reading performance between benchmark windows. These ongoing assessments can be administered in a minimal amount of time and serve to assist teachers in determining the appropriate instructional level for each child.

Information teachers receive from Progress Monitoring informs individual and classroom-wide instructional decisions. Because students advance at different rates instruction may be adjusted weekly. The Progress Monitoring portion of the mCLASS:Reading 3DTM assessment is available in both Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy SkillsTM(DIBELS®) and Early Literacy Diagnostic (ELD) measures because these assessments represent two sides of the pedagogical landscape.

Who Should I Progress Monitor?

  • Students who are reading below the proficient level on DIBELS® and who need assistance in the fundamentals of reading are monitored using the appropriate DIBELS® measures for their grade and assessment period.
  • ELD is recommended for students whose DIBELS® support recommendation is Benchmark
    • ELD uses the Text Reading and Comprehension (TRC) measure

How Often Should I Progress Monitor?

The monitoring schedule depends on the student’s risk category. In DIBELS®, high-risk students are typically monitored every 1-2 weeks and some-risk students are monitored every 2-4 weeks. Low-risk students who are being monitored using ELD are typically monitored every 4-6 weeks.
