Maryland Society for Educational Technology

The Maryland Society for Educational Technology (MSET) is offering educators in Maryland an opportunity to apply for grants to encourage the use of technology in teaching. Grants not to exceed $700 will be awarded. Grant funding must be used to promote innovative uses of instructional technology and address 21st Century learning skills to improve student achievement. All MSET members are eligible to apply for a grant if their membership is paid as of November 19, 2010, the deadline for all applicants. Membership fees may be submitted with grant applications. Vernier Technology

The Vernier Technology Awards will recognize and reward the innovative use of data collection technology using a computer, graphing calculator, or other handheld in the science classroom. A total of 7 awards will be presented: one at the elementary level, two at the middle level, three at the high school level, and one award at the college level. K-college teachers are welcome to apply. Each award will consist of $1,000 towards expenses to attend the National Association of Science Teachers National Conference, $1,000 in cash for the teacher, and $1,000 in Vernier products. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) gives K-12 teachers the opportunity to work alongside scientists and crew at sea. Teachers will be able to learn more about the ocean and maritime work and studies. The program lasts anywhere from a week to a month aboard NOAA research or survey ships. All travel and program fees are paid for by NOAA. The deadline for applicants wishing to participate during the summer of 2011 is November 30, 2010. VSA Arts

Entries for the 2011VSA Arts Panasonic Young Soloists Award competition will be accepted through November 15, 2010. These awards honor promising musicians with a disability who are age 25 or younger. Performers of all types of music–including classical, country, jazz, rap, and rock–are encouraged to apply. Only instrumental or vocal musicians with a disability as defined by the Americans With Disabilities Act are eligible to apply. National Gardening Association

The National Gardening Association and The Home Depot are now accepting grant applications for Youth Garden Grants from schools and community organizations. In evaluating grant applications, priority will be given to programs that emphasize one or more of these elements: educational focus and/or curricular ties (if applicant is a formal education program); nutrition or plant-to-food connections; environmental awareness/education; entrepreneurship; or social aspects of gardening such as leadership development, team building, community support, or service-learning. Applicants may propose to start up a new garden or to sustain an established one. For the 2010 grant cycle, 100 grants are available. Five (5) programs will receive gift cards valued at $1,000 (a $500 gift card to The Home Depot and a $500 gift card to the Gardening with Kids catalog and store) and educational materials from NGA. Ninety Five (95) programs will receive a $500 gift card to The Home Depot and educational materials from NGA. Applicants must plan to garden in 2011 with at least 15 children between the ages of three and 18 years. Previous Youth Garden Grant winners who wish to reapply must wait one year (e.g., if you won in 2010, you can apply again in 2012) and you must have significantly expanded their garden programs. U.S. Anti-Doping Agency

Sponsored by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, the True Sport Awards are open to any legal U.S. resident who works as a teacher, coach, school administrator, scout leader, or other community program leader with students in grades 6-12. The program enables entrants to receive funding to implement an idea that will empower youth to lead safe and healthy (and drug-free) lifestyles, using sport as the vehicle for learning life lessons. The top 10 entrants will receive community recognition, a pocket video camera, a 1-year subscription to Discovery Education Health, a commendation medal, $500 cash for themselves, and $2,000 for their school or organization. They will also be invited to attend an all-expenses-paid anti-doping educator's summit in Colorado Springs, CO where they will work with experts at USADA to further the impact of this important program. Applications are due November 1, 2010.


Air Force Association

Now through November 10, 2010, thewill accept applications for its $250 Educator Grants. The Educator Grant program is designed to promote aerospace education activities in classrooms from kindergarten through Grade 12. The program encourages the development of innovative aerospace activities within the prescribed curriculum. Acceptable activities include the purchase of classroom science or technology demonstration kits, classroom science supplies, science and technology software, or materials for making robots or flying objects. Grants will not support the paying of registration fees for competitions, the purchase of t-shirts, other promotional items or awards, teacher workshop fees, or activities that benefit fewer than 15 students. National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

Through November 12, 2010, thewill be accepting applications for a range of grants to support improved mathematics teaching and learning at the classroom level. Surdna Foundation

The Surdna Foundation’s Arts Teachers Fellowship Program supports outstanding teachers in public high schools specializing in the arts. Fellowship recipients design professional development program that allow them to produce their own creative work while interacting with other artists. Twenty awards of $5,500 each, with a complementary grant of $1,500 to the Fellow's school to support post-fellowship activities, will be made. The fellowship award may be used to defray the costs of tuition and other fees, room and board, travel, purchase of materials and/or equipment for personal art-making, childcare, and other relevant expenses. Eligible schools include specialized public arts high schools, as well as arts-focused, magnet and charter high schools. All permanently assigned full- and part-time arts faculty in public arts high schools are eligible. Applicants must be minimally in their fifth year of teaching arts in high school, and plan to continue as an arts teacher in their public arts high school in 2011-12. Letters of intent to apply are due by November 12, 2010; if requested, final applications will be due by February 11, 2011. College Board

Each year, the College Board recognizes exceptional teachers of Grades 6–12 for the innovative methods they use to develop their students’ writing skills with Bob Costas Grants for the Teaching of Writing. These awards of $3,000 each are awarded to teachers who are doing an inspiring job of teaching their students to write and who will benefit most from a grant to enhance a successful project. Grant funds can be used to support projects carried out in school, through an after-school writing workshop, or during a summer program. Teachers from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply; the grants are designed to support not only literature and language arts teachers, but also teachers who include writing instruction in the teaching of the sciences, math, history and the arts. American Library Association

The American Library Association is now accepting applications for Great Stories CLUB awards. The Great Stories CLUB is a reading and discussion program that targets underserved, troubled teen populations. The program is built on partnerships between libraries and a variety of organizations that serve troubled teens, including juvenile justice facilities, drug rehabilitation centers, alternative high schools, and shelters serving homeless and runaway youth. Applications will be accepted from all types of libraries (public, school, academic and special), but unless the applicant library is located within an organization that serves troubled or at-risk teens (such as an alternative high school or residential treatment facility), the library must work with a partner organization that specifically serves these teens. (Institutions that provide services to troubled teen populations are encouraged to contact their local library, and create a partnering relationship with the library as the applicant.) Up to 150 libraries will be selected to receive 33 books (11 copies of each of the three titles), supplementary materials, and access to an electronic discussion list for participating librarians. Applications are due November 19, 2010.


National Science Teacher Association

Applications and nominations for numerous National Science Teacher Association awards are due November 30, 2010. Most awards consist of a citation and a small cash prize and/or the costs of attending the NSTA’s annual convention.

Walmart and Sam's Club

The Walmart Store and Sam's Club Giving Program awards grants of $1,000–$5,000 to programs and initiatives that address the educational needs of underserved young people ages 12–25. Examples include programs focused on high school success, access and retention of first-generation college students, and adolescent literacy. The Foundation has a particular interest in supporting veterans and military families, traditionally underserved groups, individuals with disabilities, and people impacted by natural disasters. Eligible applicants include K–12 schools and colleges with current tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Organizations that meet the eligibility requirements for these programs can request an application at their local Walmart Store or Sam’s Club. Applications must be completed in full and turned into the Facility Manager or Community Involvement Coordinator. Applications for the Walmart Store and Sam’s Club Giving Programs are accepted between February 1 and December 31 of each year.


Pitsco/Hearlihy

Applications are now being accepted for the $2,000 Foundation for Technology Education Pitsco/Hearlihy Grant, which is awarded in honor of Tom and Mary Hearlihy. The grant is for a technology and engineering teacher at any grade level (K-12). Its purpose is to recognize and encourage the integration of a quality technology and engineering education program within the school curriculum. Criteria include: (1) evidence of an effective quality technology and engineering education program, (2) documented success in the integration of technology and engineering education with other academic subjects, and (3) plans for professional development using the anticipated grant funds. To be eligible for the grant, the applicant: must be a member of the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) and must register for the ITEEA Annual Conference (memmbership may be enclosed with the grant application); must be a teacher who is successfully integrating technology education within the school curriculum (applicants above the elementary school level must be technology/engineering teachers); and must attend the conference awards ceremony where award is presented. SeaWorld/Busch Gardens

Sponsored by SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, and Fujifilm, the SeaWorld/Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards recognize the efforts of K-12 students and teachers across the country who are working to protect and preserve the environment. Project applicants should be able to demonstrate significant accomplishments that have occurred prior to the submission deadline. Eight projects will be selected to receive $10,000 to support their project and an all-expenses paid trip for three students and one adult leader to SeaWorld or Busch Gardens park for a special awards event. From the eight projects, one outstanding environmental educator/leader will reeive $5,000, an an all-expenses-paid trip for one guest to the awards event, and an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2011 National Science Teachers Association national conference. Applications will be judged on the basis of: the project’s goals, objectives, and accomplishments; project support/recognition in the community; impacts the project has had on students, school, community, and the environment; how the award money would be used to benefit the project; and the levels of student/volunteer/citizen involvement in the initiative. American Association of Physics Teachers

Through December 1, 2010, the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) will accept applications for grants of $100-$500 to support high school physics teachers as they improve their teaching practices. Grants are given to teachers who propose ways to improve their instructional methods, increase student understanding of and interest and enrollment in physics courses. Teacher proposals should contain innovative ideas, such as a new teaching method or an adaptation of an existing idea. Applicants must be AAPT members. Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation

The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation and Discovery Education are now inviting legal U.S. residents 18 years of age or older to enter their school to win prizes through the Healthy Playground Makeover Sweepstakes. On or about December 15, 2010, a random drawing from among all eligible entries received will be conducted to award one (1) Grand Prize consisting of a $10,000 grant to improve/build/purchase playground equipment, $25,000 in merchandise from Sports Authority and up to 350 sport/pedometer watches from the Paul Pierce Truth on Health Foundation. Five (5) Second Prizes consisting of $15,000 (each) in merchandise from Sports Authority also will be awarded. The last day to enter the sweepstakes is December 1, 2010.


Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation

The National Child Care Teacher Awards, sponsored by the Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation and Tylenol, are being offered to child care teachers throughout the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Applicants are asked to design an enhancement project for the children in their classroom, illustrating its educational, social, and emotional benefits. Award recipients will receive a $1,000 grant—$500 to be used to implement the proposed project, and $500 for the teachers personal use. The top 10 qualifiers become finalists for National Child Care Teacher of the Year and the Helene Marks Award, which carries a prize of an additional $1,000. Applicants must be teachers of infant, toddler or preschool-aged children in a home, group or center-based program that is fully compliant with local and state regulations for operating child care programs, and must work a minimum of 32 hours per week, 12 months per year at the same center. Teachers must be with the same children for 10 consecutive months. Programs must be open a minimum of 10 hours a day, five days a week.
