Montgomery County Public Schools is committed to providing rigorous instructional programs that encourage all students to realize their full potential as learners. A continuum of programs and services are provided.
Students’ learning may be enriched and accelerated; and, students may participate in advanced-level coursework at their local schools. Instruction is differentiated to provide all students appropriate pacing and support necessary for advanced-level learning.
Students may also attend special programs such as centers for enriched studies, magnet programs, or specialized programs, based on their interest and talent.
The gifted and talented (GT) identification process for the 2021-2022 school year has been completed and decision letters mailed to all students in grade 2 and students in grades 3, 5, and 7 who . In accordance with Montgomery County Public Schools Regulation IOA-RA, Gifted and Talented Education, and Maryland COMAR 13A.04.07, Gifted and Talented Education, students participate in a screening process for gifted and talented identification. If you have questions about the process, you may email AEIquestions@mcpsmd.org.
If your student did not meet the criteria for the gifted and talented designation and you would like to request for your student to participate in the next rescreening opportunity, please complete the Parent Request for Rescreen Google form by Friday, January 13, 2023. If requested, rescreening will occur in grade 3, 5 or 7.
You do not need to request rescreening if the letter you received indicates that your student will be rescreened.

To address the needs of academically gifted and advanced students at the local school level, MCPS will expand the ELC to additional schools in 2022–2023. Based on multiple factors including: demographic, socioeconomic, and regional diversity, numbers of students surfaced in universal review, school readiness, and other conditions that lead to successful implementation, MCPS has selected 20 schools for ELC implementation in the 2022-23 school year. These schools represent a range of diversity in demographics, FARMS rates, school type, and regions. ELC expansion will continue in the 2023–2024 school year.

Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) School Awards Program- This program honors exceptional elementary, middle, and high schools that offer gifted and telented programs aligned with the objectives and criteria of the Maryland Criteria for Excellence: Gifted and Talented Program Guidelines and Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 13A.04.07 Gifted and Talented Education. The AEI Feedback Council provides feedback and continuing guidance to staff on MCPS programs and the implementation of MCPS Policy IOA Gifted and Talented Education (PDF). The committee is comprised of 20-25 community and staff stakeholders who represent multiple points of view.
