Curriculum 2.0 Compacted Grades 4/5 Math

Which students will participate in the compacted Curriculum 2.0 (C2.0) Compacted Grades 4/5 Math course?

While we expect most students will be well-served in the C2.0 Grade 4 Math, there will be some students who demonstrate readiness for above grade-level content and will have access to the Curriculum 2.0 compacted Grades 4/5 Math course. The students who will participate in the compacted curriculum are those who have consistently demonstrated proficiency of all grade-level indicators and acceleration opportunities. Students participating in the compacted class will be on track to enroll in Geometry in Grade 8.

What is the design of the Curriculum 2.0 Compacted Grades 4/5 Math?

This course combines all of C2.0 Grade 4 mathematics indicators with part of C2.0 Grade 5 mathematics indicators. Students will cover the content of six marking periods (four marking period of Math 4 and two marking period of Math 5) in four marking periods.

How are students identified to participate in the Curriculum 2.0 Compacted Grades 4/5 course?

A two-step identification process was developed to determine which students, systemwide, would best be served by the compacted course. In the first step, schools reviewed a wide range of existing student performance data to help identify students that might be candidates for the compacted course. In the second step, teachers assessed these identified students on a series of tasks to provide more information on whether they would be best served in a compacted course. These tasks helped measure students’ understanding, computation, application, reasoning, and engagement (UCARE) in mathematics. To be considered for the compacted mathematics course, a student would need to demonstrate all of the following:

  1. Independently and consistently demonstrates proficiency as defined by the five strands of UCARE, earlier than the end of instruction for concepts and/or topics.
  2. Meets or exceeds the benchmark for enriched and accelerated mathematics within the UCARE Assessment Portfolio (See below).
  3. Has needs that would best be met through a much quicker pace of instruction, while maintaining the depth of understanding.
  4. Is among the highest performing students in the grade level and/or does not have a group of similarly situated peers in his or her grade-level class.

Schools completed the UCARE Assessment Portfolio for candidate students. These data were analyzed to establish a system benchmark for consideration of having met criterion 2 (above). Schools were provided the system benchmark information and then asked to make a final recommendation for each student. Schools notified Parents/guardians of students who are recommended for the compacted curriculum.

If my child is recommended for the Curriculum 2.0 Compacted Grades 4/5 Math course, must he/she participate in the course?

Participation in the Curriculum 2.0 Compacted Grades 4/5 Math course is a parent/guardian decision. If the parent/guardian chooses not to have his/her student participate in the compacted math course, every effort will be made to meet the needs of the students in the grade-level Curriculum 2.0 Grade 4 Math.

If my child was identified as a candidate for the compacted course but was not recommended to participate, with whom can I talk?

If you would like additional information about the identification process and your child’s performance, please talk to the principal at your child’s school.
