Special Education Teacher at Georgian Forest Elementary School Wins National Award for Excellence

March 22, 2001
Barbara Danoff Friedlander, a special education teacher at Georgian Forest Elementary School, is one of ten national winners of the 2001 Shaklee Teacher Award. The award is sponsored by the Shaklee Institute for Improving Special Education to honor exemplary special education teachers.

Applicants for the honor answered a series of in-depth questions regarding their teaching practices, research and successes. Award winners were selected based on specific student outcomes, professional knowledge, and teaching practices employed in their roles as special education teachers.

Friedlander and the other winners will participate in a summer seminar led by senior scholars of the Shaklee Institute in Wichita, Kansas, to explore issues that will further develop each teacher's effectiveness in serving children with disabilities.

Each winning teacher received $1,000 and a pewter sculpture designed by artist Michael Ricker.
