Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students earned more than $7 million in scholarships during fall regional on-the-spot admissions events held at various high schools ahead of the 16th Annual HBCU Fair. A total of 370 students participated in 590 interviews with college representatives resulting in 533 acceptances. 

More than 2,000 students, parents and community members are registered to attend this year’s fair on Friday, Feb. 16 at The Universities at Shady Grove. The free, in-person event will provide students in Grades 8–12 an opportunity to meet representatives from more than 30 HBCUs and 20 organizations. Representatives will share information and answer questions from students and parents about admissions, financial aid, testing, majors and much more.

“Historically Black Colleges and Universities have such an important and valuable role in our society,” said Dr. Karen Crews, MCPS Director of Student Well-being and Achievements. “We want to ensure that MCPS students are not only exposed to HBCUs, but have the opportunity to engage with representatives and hear from alumni to explore the various opportunities available to them.” 

The event will also feature a college preparation workshop for middle school students and parents, a discussion on college life, FAFSA completion assistance, scholarship information and more. This event is co-sponsored by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and the Montgomery County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

All students and parents/guardians must register to attend.
