Earlier this month, students in John F. Kennedy High School’s Broadcast Journalism and Communications Academy earned two Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The first award was for their October Edition of The Sword, the school’s student-produced news magazine show, which included a story on Narcan, Field of Screams, and the Hispanic Heritage Festival in Silver Spring/Wheaton. The second award was for their story on teacher retention. Kennedy is the only school in MCPS, and the only school in Maryland, to receive this honor during the 2024–2025 school year.

Award recipients include Class of 2025 graduates Esther Dzinedza, Sage Martinez, Chiara Eduardo and Elias Reyes, current senior Oscar Salguero and current junior Amanda Santiago, who collaborated on these award-winning projects under the guidance of Deborah Wischmann, lead teacher in the Broadcast Journalism and Communications Academy.
