More than 350 students from 35 MCPS middle schools and five high schools took part in the Montgomery County History Day competition last week at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School. More than 120 people volunteered as judges to interview and score the students’ projects.

The top two projects from each category (documentary, website, paper, performance, exhibit) in both individual and group were recognized and will move on to compete at the state level. The state competition is on May 4 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Takoma Park Wins Real Food Culinary Challenge

Takoma Park Middle School won first place in the 2024 Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge. Takoma Park was the only MCPS school to compete this year; it was their fifth time winning first place in the last six years. They also won the Community Choice for the lunch category. Students presented the following meal: paneer grilled cheese with sweet chili aioli and coriander chutney, oven-baked fries with masala seasoning, vegetable dal and sugar-free mango chutney. 

Teams were asked to create healthy and tasty menu items that meet USDA guidelines and adhere to strict per-meal budgets.

Hundreds Attend Second Annual Girls’ Summit

More than 1,000 attendees participated in the second annual Girls’ Summit. Girls from sixth through twelfth grades and their parents/caregivers took part in workshops on mental health, physical wellness, healthy eating, self-esteem, relaxation, creative arts therapy and more. The summit concluded with a fashion show sponsored by White House Black Market, which celebrated diverse body types and fashion. Watch a video from the event.

Families Enjoy STEM, Math Night at Brookhaven

More than 350 students and parents attended a STEM and Math Night at Brookhaven Elementary School last week. Families also participated in activities, gathered valuable information and connected with vendors.

MCPS and MoCo EmpowHER Host Leaders Luncheon

The MCPS Student Leadership and Extracurricular Activities Unit and MoCo EmpowHER held the first EmpowHERed Leaders Luncheon to celebrate International Women’s Day. About 200 female and non-binary students united at the Universities of Shady Grove for a special event where they learned about inspiring MCPS female student leaders and their journey to success in various fields, including art, performance, activism and business. MoCo EmpowHER, the MCPS student leadership group for female and non-binary students, works to create a safe space for open dialogue about women’s issues and provide leadership development opportunities for young women.
