Stone Mill Elementary School held a school assembly today (Dec. 13) to raise its National Blue Ribbon flag. The school was given the Blue Ribbon distinction by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) in September. Stone Mill is the 43rd MCPS school to be named a National Blue Ribbon winner.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. The recognition is based on a school's overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups on assessments.

Stone Mill has more than 550 students and was named an Exemplary High Performing award winner. More than three-quarters of its students are identified as gifted and talented or are working above grade level or both. It also has the largest special education preschool education program in MCPS, and about 20 percent of its students are English Language Learners.

Cosmetology Students Offer Salon Day to Clients

Earlier this month, cosmetology students at Thomas Edison High School of Technology held a Salon Day, where students offered services to clients. Salon Day allowed students to apply what they’ve been learning in class and practice their skills. They provided a variety of services, including: shampoo, blow dry, hair coloring, thermal straightening, thermal curls, haircuts, waxing, braiding and manicures.Edison cosmetology, haircut.jpg

The event was a fundraiser for Skills USA, a national career and technical student organization serving middle school, high school and college students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.
