Student Service Learning

Students are encouraged to continue earning student service learning hours towards their graduation requirement, even during distance learning. The MCPS SSL program has made some significant changes to allow students to earn SSL hours virtually if they:

  • Are serving a community need through a non-profit organization
  • Monitored by a supervisor of the non-profit agency or MCPS staff member
  • Sponsored by an MCPS teacher or staff member

Extracurricular Activities

The MCPS extracurricular and fine arts programs fully resumed in-person operations in the fall within the guidelines of Montgomery County Public Schools’ current procedures and protocols for COVID-19 safety. Students, staff, and guests will be expected to follow the MCPS mitigation strategies to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

MCPS curriculum and instructional office staff have created a guidance document that is content focused but shares appropriate considerations and expectations for COVID-19 safety for in-person engagement. Dance ensembles, drama clubs, choral and instrumental music programs are expected to follow specific guidelines for COVID-19 safety. Singing and instrumental music produced by woodwind or brass instruments are thought to be higher-risk activities for COVID-19 spread due to the aggressive expelling of respiratory droplets. Extra precautions will be expected for vocalists and instrumental musicians when participating.

This webpage provides the latest updates on program operations, school specific extracurricular activity program information, and the online student-to-student extracurricular activity experiences.

Students will earn credit towards earning the MCPS Certificate of Student Engagement.

The following extracurricular activities will continue:
  • Academic support for students
  • Athletic activities as directed by the MCPS Systemwide Athletics Unit
  • Co-curricular activities
  • Clubs and organizations
  • Education and engagement opportunities
  • Youth programming for counseling, mentorship, and social emotional support

MCPS is excited to bring this wide array of extracurricular activities and fine arts programs to our students. We remain committed to every student through these programs to help students:

  • Be creative
  • Build confidence
  • Stay connected with their peers and adult coaches, sponsors and mentors and
  • Develop their personal and professional skills in areas of their interest.
