Advanced Placement (AP) Courses

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) offers a number of online Advanced Placement (AP) courses to students in the state of Maryland through its Maryland Virtual School (MVS) initiative. MCPS has approved the courses listed below for MCPS credit.

Registration for online AP courses is available from August 11 to April 30. Students are unable to register during the months of May, June, and July.

What do I need to know before I sign up for an online AP course?

  • Students are only able to take and earn AP credit from MSDE-approved AP courses and vendors.
  • Parents and guardians should work closely with their student's school to determine eligibility.

Who can take online AP courses?

  • Many AP courses have prerequisites and/or eligibility requirements. Students should discuss with their counselor eligibility for taking an online AP course.
  • Students complete these courses outside of the school day if the course is not available at the local school or the student cannot schedule the course within the school day schedule.

How do I enroll in an online AP course?

  • Course registrations must be completed through the MCPS Student Online Learning online AP course application procedure. This procedure includes:
    1. discussing AP eligibility with a counselor,
    2. complete Online AP Course Application Form (linked at the top of this page),
    3. once approved, information on how to enroll in the online AP course will be sent via email,
    4. enrolling in the course(s) through the vendor and paying the vendor directly.
  • Students may not enroll in an online AP course directly through the Maryland Virtual School (MVS). Any enrollment directly into an online AP course through the MVS's system, even into an MSDE-approved course from an MSDE-approved vendor, without following the MCPS enrollment procedure may result in no credit awarding.

When are online AP courses offered?

  • Students may only apply for MCPS approval in the timeframe mentioned at the top of this page.
  • Online AP courses start and run at various times throughout the year.
  • The amount of time spent on an AP course will vary by student.

What is the cost for an online AP course?

  • AP course tuition varies by vendor.
  • Cost does not include required and optional course materials.

Can I retake an online AP course to replace a grade on my transcript?

  • Students only may replace a course with a course of the same or comparable course code, as authorized by the Office of Curriculum and Instructional Programs. See MCPS regulation IKC-RA for more details.
    • For example: AP Government & Politics (SOC2023) will not serve as a replacement for AP Government & Politics w/NSL (SOC2021A/SOC2021B).

AP 2D Art & Design MCPS course is AP 2D Art & Design A/B (ART2064A/ART2064B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: Students will synthesize and adapt approaches to using two-dimensional media, techniques, and processes to develop a personal style and voice. They will present a personal exhibition and justify curatorial choices that communicate meaning. Students will discover how artists often work in collective studios and develop a collegial environment that thrives on giving and receiving constructive criticism. Students submit a portfolio of original work to meet the requirements for the AP Exam to demonstrate the competencies as identified by the College Board. This course may be repeated once for credit.

AP Art History MCPS course is AP Art History A/B (ART2054A/ART2054B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: Students will explore the history of art across the globe from prehistory to the present. They will analyze works of art through observation, discussion, reading, and research. Writing, academic language, and critical thinking skills are developed through evaluating works of art from different eras and cultures; perceiving connections to artistic traditions, styles, or practices in artwork; and developing a theory about the meaning of artwork and citing evidence to support that interpretation.

AP Biology MCPS course is AP Biology A/B (SCI2040A/SCI2040B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: This course is designed for students to continue their interest in biology. The course emphasizes laboratory investigations and builds on the concepts covered in Biology. Students prepare to take the AP Biology examination at the end of the course. Topics include chemistry of life, cytology, cellular energetics, genetics, diversity of life, evolution, ecology, and behavior. Dissections may occur in this course. See Alternatives to Dissection at the end of the Science section. This course is approved for NGSS high school graduation credit.

AP Calculus AB MCPS course is AP AB Calculus A/B (MAT2040A/MAT2040B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Prerequisites: Honors Precalculus A/B

Course description: Calculus AB topics are those traditionally offered in the first year of calculus in college, and are designed for students who wish to obtain a semester of AP in college. The topics studied include limits, continuity, derivatives and integrals of algebraic and transcendental functions and their applications, and elementary differential equations.

AP Calculus BC MCPS course is AP BC Calculus A/B (MAT2041A/MAT2041B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Prerequisites: Honors Precalculus A/B

Course description: Calculus BC includes all of the topics in Calculus AB, as well as convergence tests for series, Taylor or Maclaurin series, vector, polar, and parametric functions. Students in BC Calculus may receive two semesters of AP in mathematics.

Course description: This NGSS-aligned course is designed for students to continue their interest in Chemistry as it relates to science, technology, and engineering. This course promotes enduring, conceptual understandings through inquiry-based learning, scientific reasoning, and engaging in science practices. Students are prepared to take the AP Chemistry examination at the end of the course. Topics of study will include properties and changes of matter, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and intermolecular interactions. This course is approved for NGSS high school graduation credit.

AP Comparative Government and Politics MCPS course is AP GovPolitics Comp A/B (SOC2024A/SOC2024B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: This college-level course is both a survey of the various forms of government found throughout the world and an in-depth study of specific governments and approaches to politics. Students compare the structure of governmental institutions in different countries and learn how each structure affects society in general and individuals in particular. The concept of political change and the different methods to effect such change are a focus in the course.

AP Computer Science (JAVA) A MCPS course is AP Computer Science JAVA A/B (ITC2081A/ITC2081B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: Using the Java language, students explore in-depth work with text files and arrays, abstract data types, recursion, searching and sorting algorithms, and program efficiency. Examination of specified class behaviors, interrelated objects, and object hierarchies are studied. Students may elect to take the A version of the AP computer Science exam upon completion of this course.

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: This course, offered in partnership with Code.org, advances student understanding of the central ideas of computer science, engaging students in activities that show how computing changes the world. Through a focus on creativity, students explore technology as a means for solving computational problems, examining computer science's relevance to and impact on the world today.

Course description: This college-level course is a survey in European history from the 15th century to the present. A college-level text is used, and students engage in college-level writing and discussion. This course prepares students for the AP European History examination.p>

AP Language and Composition MCPS course is AP Language and Comp A/B (ENG2031A/ENG2031B)

Grade level: 9–12

Prerequisites: English 10 A/B

Course description: This course is designed for motivated students with a command of standard English and a lively interest in the power and versatility of language. Students read complex prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and write for a range of purposes to express ideas with clarity and precision. Students are strongly encouraged to take the AP examination at the end of the course.

AP Literature and Comp MCPS course is AP Literature and Comp A/B (ENG2032A / ENG2032B)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: This course places an emphasis on reading challenging literature, both classical and contemporary and representative of dominant literary genres and themes. Students apply methods of literary analysis and write for a variety of purposes to increase their precision in expression. Students are strongly encouraged to take the AP examination at the end of the course.

Corequisite: Chemistry A/B

Course description: AP Environmental Science is for highly motivated students with interest in interdisciplinary science. It builds on concepts covered in Environmental Science, with greater detail in content and laboratory investigations. Students are prepared to take the AP Environmental Science examination. Topics include the interrelationships of the natural world and environmental problems, issues, and solutions. This course is NGSS aligned.

AP French Language and Culture MCPS course is AP French LC A/B (WLG2057A/WLG2057B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: These courses are for world languages students interested in college-level work. The courses link language and culture while developing students' proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students read, discuss, and react to a variety of texts orally and in writing in preparation for the AP Examination.

AP Government MCPS course is AP Government Politics (SOC2023)

Number of credits and course duration: 0.5 credit (1 semester)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: This college-level course is a survey of the structure and function of American government and politics that begins with an analysis of the Constitution, the foundation of the American political system. Students study the three branches of government, administrative agencies that support each branch, the role of political behavior in the democratic process, and the workings of political parties and interest groups.

AP Human Geography MCPS course is AP Human Geography A/B (SOC2068A/SOC2068B)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: This college-level course introduces students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth's surface. Students employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to analyze human social organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their science and practice.

Number of credits and course duration: 0.5 credit (1 semester)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: This course is for students interested in college-level work in economics. Study begins with fundamental economic concepts such as scarcity, opportunity costs, production possibilities, specialization, comparative advantage, demand, supply, and price determination. Major topics include measurement of economic performance, national income and price determination, and international economics and growth.

AP Microeconomics MCPS course is AP Microeconomics (SOC2065)

Course description: This course is for advanced students interested in college-level work in economics and/or gaining advanced standing in college. The course begins with a study of fundamental economic concepts such as scarcity, opportunity costs, production possibilities, specialization, and comparative advantage. Major topics include the nature of functions of product markets; factor markets; and efficiency, equity, and the role of government.

AP Music Theory MCPS course is AP Music Theory A/B (ART2076A/ART2076B)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: Students with strong interest and preparation in music prepare to meet the requirements of the College Board for AP in Music Theory. Practice in sight-singing, dictation, composition, and improvisation is complemented by listening and score analysis. In the second semester, students read, write, and analyze music of increasing complexity. They study in detail the techniques used to compose music, including electronic media.

AP Physics 1 MCPS course is AP Physics 1 A/B (SCI2072A/SCI2072B)

Course description: This NGSS aligned course is for highly motivated students with an interest in the physical sciences and builds on concepts covered in Physics with greater detail in content and laboratory investigations. Students explore Newtonian mechanics, including rotational dynamics and angular momentum; work, energy, and power; and mechanical waves and sound. Electric circuits will be introduced.

AP Music Theory MCPS course is AP Physics 2 A/B (SCI2073A/SCI2073B)

Course description: This NGSS aligned course is for students with an interest in the physical sciences and builds on concepts covered in Physics with greater detail in content and laboratory investigations. Students explore fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics, and atomic and nuclear physics. This course is approved for NGSS high school graduation credit.

Course description: This NGSS-algined course is for students with interest in the physical sciences. Students use calculus in problem solving and in derivations as they study electricity and magnetism. Topics include electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, and electrodynamics. Students are prepared to take the AP Physics Electricity and Magnetism examination. This course is approved for NGSS high school graduation credit.

AP Physics C (Mech) MCPS course is AP Physics C Mechanics A/B (SCI2064A/SCI2064B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: This NGSS-aligned course is for students with interest in the physical sciences. Students use calculus in problem solving and in derivations as they study Newtonian mechanics. Students are prepared to take the AP Physics Mechanics examination. This course is approved for NGSS high school graduation credit.

AP Precalculus MCPS course is AP Precalculus A/B (MAT2033A/MAT2033B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: AP Precalculus is a course designed to better prepare students for college-level calculus as well as provide the foundation for other mathematics and science courses. Students focus on the use of technology, modeling and problem solving that are foundational for careers in mathematics, physics, biology, health science, social science, and data science. Students develop a conceptual understanding of polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric and polar functions, and functions involving parameters, vectors, and matrices to support their learning and application of mathematics in the real world. AP Precalculus is structured to be a stepping block to AP Calculus as well as a College Board Exam that assesses three practices: procedural and symbolic fluency, multiple representations, and communication and reasoning. AP Precalculus satisfies one of the Math graduation requirements.

AP Psychology MCPS course is AP Psychology A/B (SOC2069A/SOC2069B)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: This college-level course prepares students for the AP exam. Students scientifically study behavior and investigate the psychological domains-methods of research, biopsychology, cognitive processes, lifespan development, and sociocultural dimensions of behavior, thinking and language, states of consciousness, individual differences, personality and assessment, and psychological disorders and their treatment.

AP Statistics MCPS course is AP Statistics A/B (MAT2068A/MAT2068B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Prerequisites: Algebra 2 A/B

Course description: AP Statistics students engage in the exploratory analysis of data, using graphical and numerical techniques. Data sets are collected using statistical design methods. Students produce appropriate models using probability, simulation, and statistical inference. Models are used to draw conclusions from data and analyzed by inferential methods to determine whether the data support or discredit the model. This course is equivalent to a non-calculus-based introductory college statistics course.

AP US History MCPS course is AP US History A/B (SOC2022A/SOC2022B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: This course is for students desiring a freshman college-level course in United States history. The course is a survey of this national history from 1607 to the present, using a college-level text and requiring college-level writing and discussion. AP U.S. History A/B satisfies the graduation requirement of a year in U.S. History.

AP World History MCPS course is AP World History A/B (SOC2047A/SOC2047B)

Number of credits and course duration: 1 credit (2 semesters)

Grade level: 9–12

Course description: This college-level course helps students develop greater understanding of world history and human societies. This understanding is advanced through a combination of selective factual knowledge and appropriate analytical skills. The chronological time frame is from 8000 BCE to the present. AP World History A/B satisfies the graduation requirement of a year in Modern World History.
