Instrumental Music

The Montgomery County Public Schools Music Program is aligned with National and State Music Education Standards.

The study of music assists in the acquisition of 21st Century Skills.  The cooperative learning setting of music ensembles allows students to develop both individually and as members of a larger community.  The creativity inherent in the creation or interpretation of a musical selection fosters creative thinking and problem-solving strategies that permeate other facets of life.  We encourage and celebrate the personal expression within every child.

"Music is one way for young people to connect with themselves, but it is also a bridge for connecting with others. Through music, we can introduce children to the richness and diversity of the human family and to the myriad rhythms of life." Daniel A. Carp, Eastman Kodak Company Chairman and CEO

Honors Ensembles
The Montgomery County Public Schools Honors Bands and Orchestras have a long tradition of excellence.  Junior ensembles are made up of selected students in Grades 7 through 9 and Senior ensembles are comprised of students in Grades 10 through 12.  Students are given the opportunity to audition for the Junior Band, Junior Jazz Ensemble, Junior Orchestra, Senior Band, Senior Jazz Ensemble, or Senior Orchestra.  Selected students have the opportunity to extend their musical experience and perform with students from other schools in the county.  Students in Grade 6 have the opportunity to audition with their instrumental music teacher for the 6th grade band or orchestra.

Montgomery County Public Schools participate yearly in several district-level band and orchestra festivals.  The Maryland Music Educators Association designates Montgomery County as District II.  Ensembles that receive overall superior ratings are eligible to participate at the Maryland State Band and Orchestra Festivals.
