About This School
Needwood Academy is operated solely by Montgomery County Public Schools for high school students who are not achieving at their potential for a wide variety of reasons, usually including behavior and/or attendance problems. Students are referred through the pupil personnel worker through the home school Educational Management Team. The school provides academic instruction in coursework for credits toward a high school diploma. In addition, a behavioral/social skills component gives students the skills necessary to return to their home school and success. This program is considered a Level-2 program in the continuum of intervention services for at-risk students.
Needwood Academy serves 60 students in grades 9-12. MCPS staff includes 7 teachers and 4 paraeducators.
Needwood also offers a structured recovery program for an additional 35 students with substance abuse problems that have interfered with school attendance and performance. Staff includes 4 MCPS teachers and 1 paraeducator.
