Drive for Supplies Recycles Usable School Supplies

June 20, 2007
Press Event on July 16 Will Celebrate the Results of This Year’s Drive

The annual Drive for Supplies press conference and celebration will take place in the Clarksburg High School cafeteria on Monday, July 16, at 10:00 a.m.

Drive for Supplies is a program to encourage students to donate used, but usable school supplies at the end of the school year when they clean out their lockers, bookbags, and desks. At the same time, it is an opportunity to educate students about recycling.

The project has grown steadily since it began in Montgomery County Public Schools in 2000. In 2006, supplies weighing a total of 5,718 pounds were collected for distribution to non-profit agencies and county schools with a high number of low-income students. Drive for Supplies was formed in 1999 by Kevin and Louise Newcomer, founders of Learn Shop, Inc., a non-profit organization based in Wheaton, Maryland.

Students who wish to earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours over the summer can volunteer for the Drive for Supplies project. Middle and high school students will sort, box, and weigh the donated supplies. The work will take place in the Clarksburg High School cafeteria, 22500 Wims Road in Clarksburg, July 9–11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will complete the SSL paperwork when they arrive; no prior sign-up is required. Elementary school students are welcome to attend, but must be supervised by a parent.

Individuals and companies wishing to make donations should call the Student Affairs Office at 301-670-1419 for details.

Non-profit organizations that benefit children will pick up the supplies on July 16 following the press conference. Organizations must register by calling the Student Affairs Office.
