The Division of Specialized Support Services will hold a webinar for families from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, focused on what’s new in special education services, staffing and supports — and why. MCPS special education leaders will provide context for what this means for schools and classrooms. The session will be held virtually, featuring a brief presentation followed by questions and answers. The Zoom link is available here.
There are two other upcoming events for special ed families — the monthly SECAC meeting on April 23 and the Special Education Family Resource Fair on May 9.
The Special Education Citizen’s Advisory Committee (SECAC) meeting will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 23 on Zoom. The meeting topic will focus on Alternative Learning Outcomes, provide follow-up on Specially Designed Instruction, and allow time for parents to discuss relevant issues impacting special education in MCPS. The link to the meeting and the agenda will be posted on the Family Support Page the week of the meeting.
Also, the Special Education Family Resource Fair will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 9 at Paint Branch High School. This free event will connect families, educators and community organizations with resources and information to support individuals with special needs. Attendees can gather information, ask questions, and network with professionals and other families facing similar challenges. There will also be children’s activities, including moon bounces, face painting, tattoo artists and more. Food trucks will be available on-site for meal purchases. Paint Branch is located at 14121 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville.
