Jefferson Reyes, a student at Rolling Terrace Elementary School, was honored Sept. 30 during the Montgomery County Council’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, Legacy in Motion: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future.

Reyes was recognized for his heroic actions in October 2024, when he pulled a young child out of the path of an oncoming school bus during dismissal. His quick thinking likely saved the child’s life and earned him the AAA School Safety Patrol Lifesaving Award earlier this year, one of only four students nationwide to receive the honor.

During Monday’s celebration, Montgomery County Board of Education Vice President Grace Rivera-Oven and At-Large Member Karla Silvestre congratulated Reyes and praised his courage. His mother, Lorena Rubio, stood proudly by his side as he was recognized in front of elected officials, community leaders and fellow students.
