MCPS Honors Hispanic Heritage Month with Legacy and Future-Focused Awards

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a dynamic and heartfelt event on Oct. 13, recognizing the profound impact of Latino leaders and educators in the community.
Board of Education President Julie Yang opened the event by acknowledging the diversity and strength of the Hispanic and Latino communities within MCPS, where 35% of students identify as Latino.
The evening featured the presentation of three distinguished awards across two categories:
Legacy Awards were presented to Teresa Wright and Maria Garcia for their lifelong dedication to supporting Latino students and families in Montgomery County.
- Teresa Wright, known as “the abuelita of Montgomery County,” was honored for decades of service in bilingual education, ESOL programs and community advocacy.
- Maria Garcia was recognized for her tireless efforts helping Latino families navigate college access and financial aid, becoming a trusted guide for countless students.
The Inspiring the Future Award was presented to Tania Perez-Fuentes, whose work with the Career Readiness Education Academy (CREA) program has empowered students through mentorship, advocacy and unwavering support. A tribute video featuring student voices underscored the depth of her impact.
The celebration also featured cultural performances by students from Gloria de la Danza and Northwest High School’s Paso Fuerte Latin Dance Team, showcasing the pride, rhythm and heritage of Latin America.
