“A lot of chairs rock and swivel and roll and no matter what mood my students are in, no matter what need they need, what need they have, in that moment they'll be able to find something in this classroom that works for them.” said Kelsey Orsborne, Special Education teacher at Sherwood Elementary School. “Finding chairs that work for my students and seating is always a problem, just because my students have such different individual needs.”

Orsborn and her students returned this fall to a newly redesigned classroom after her winning entry in the 2024 ReImagine Your Classroom contest.

“The way that we were able to bring in this flexible seating we have a large variety within this one classroom now,” Orsborne continued.

Working closely with designers, Orsborne selected furniture and layouts to support both learning and sensory needs. The new space features flexible seating options, improved organization and calming design elements, all aimed at creating a welcoming environment for students with autism.

“This new classroom aligns with our school’s vision of quality instruction in amazing learning environments, and I’m most excited to see Ms. Kelsey in action with kids,” said Sherwood Principal Jason Jefferson.

Sponsored by Dancker, Steelcase and Smith System, the contest invited educators from across the DMV region to share ideas for transforming their learning spaces. Orsborne’s submission stood out, earning her students a classroom makeover tailored to their unique needs. The big reveal took place on Aug. 13, with families, staff and community members, just in time for the 2025–2026 school year.

“ I think the new organization is really going to help my students be able to navigate the space with more independence,” said Orsborne. “This new classroom is going to contribute to such a positive learning environment where students’ needs are being met so that they are more focused, engaged and excited about learning.”
