Rachel Carson Hosts “One School, One Book” to Inspire a Love of Reading and Strengthen Community

At Rachel Carson Elementary School, summer learning is about more than just worksheets and homework—it’s about building connections, sparking joy in reading and bringing families together. For years, the school has prioritized supporting students’ literacy and math growth over the summer by sending home individualized learning packets.
Over the past three years, the school partnered with the PTA to send home books selected by grade level. Last summer, the school centered its theme around belonging. This year, they launched a new initiative: One School, One Book, reading Stella Diaz Has Something To Say by Angela Dominguez.
“With One School, One Book, every family receives the same novel to read at home alongside me each Tuesday in July,” said Principal Mindy Reeves. “This initiative strengthens the home-school connection, increases family engagement, supports reading development and fosters a sense of community among our students and staff.”
The impact has already been felt. Participation in the weekly reading nights has been strong, and the school is seeing growing excitement from families. Teachers have also joined in, including the school’s new reading specialist who recently served as a guest reader.
“This has been a great way to introduce new teachers to the community and vice versa,” said Reeves.
