Julius West Students Take Action for the Chesapeake Bay

IMG_6800.jpg

Students at Julius West Middle School participated in hands-on activities that brought science, sustainability and community service together to celebrate Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week. Highlights included:

  • Creating a new pollinator garden for their outdoor classroom.
  • Designing storm drain art to raise water quality awareness.
  • Stream monitoring.

The celebration was made possible in partnership with the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Nature Forward and the Montgomery County Master Gardeners. Students earned Student Service Learning hours for their efforts while making a tangible impact on their school grounds and local environment.

This event supported the development of the school’s outdoor classroom and marked the first step in their journey with the WUSA 9 “Eco Challenge” grant from Washington Gas.

In November 2024, Julius West was selected as one of four schools to receive $5,000 from contest sponsor Washington Gas for its environmental stewardship efforts. The school will put the funds toward completing its pollinator garden and outdoor classroom. Along with the grant, the school will receive free professional development and educational materials from the Smithsonian Science Education Center.
