In a split second, a routine school day turned into a life or death moment. Thanks to the quick thinking of a fifth grade student, a tragedy was narrowly avoided and a young hero was born.

According to witnesses, during dismissal on October 15, 2024, a young child broke away from their parent and ran toward the bus lane just as a school bus pulled out. That’s when Jefferson Reyes, a fifth-grade safety patrol at Rolling Terrace Elementary School, sprang into action and pulled the child out of the path of an oncoming bus, likely saving the child’s life.

In recognition of his bravery and quick thinking in a life-threatening situation, Jefferson received the AAA School Safety Patrol Lifesaving Award on June 11, 2025. Only four students nationwide are receiving the award this year.

“It is the highest honor bestowed upon any safety patroller in our country,” said Ragina Ali, public and government affairs manager for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “Jefferson’s quick action and courage literally saved the life of a child.”

“I still can’t explain it,” Jefferson said. “I’m just really happy. I saved a life, and I’m proud. My friends celebrated me, and I’m just thankful.”

Kaneene Livingston, a STEM teacher at the school who was the adult assigned to supervise the bus lane at dismissal, said Jefferson's quick thinking prevented a tragedy. “I’m so proud of him,” Livingston said. “That child could have been seriously hurt or worse, but Jefferson reacted immediately and saved a life.”

Rolling Terrace physical education teacher and patrol sponsor Charles Silberman nominated Jefferson for the award.

“The act itself was lifesaving,” Silberman said. “But Jefferson is also thoughtful, hardworking, and truly cares about others. He has the qualities of a leader, and I hope this moment helps him see the value he has and the difference he can make.”

Jefferson’s mother, Lorena Rubio, said she was deeply moved by her son’s bravery. “I am so proud that he is my son,” she said.

During the award ceremony, Jefferson was visibly emotional as he reflected on what happened.

“I want to thank my mom for always teaching me to never give up. I’m happy I listened to her advice,” he said. “I don’t have the words... I’m just really, really happy.”
