Wheaton Woods Celebrates Teachers and Staff All Year

As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, MCPS is highlighting how N. Elizabeth (Liz) Collins, principal of Wheaton Woods Elementary School, makes it a priority to celebrate her teachers and staff all year.

Principal Collins plans monthly initiatives to recognize, uplift and support her teachers and staff—ensuring appreciation is more than a one-week event.

From heartfelt shout-outs and special meals to creative giveaways and wellness events, she’s always looking for new, meaningful ways to show gratitude.

“There are many ways I celebrate, recognize and lean in toward effective wellness opportunities for staff,” said Collins. “It's an ongoing practice across the year.”

One of her standout initiatives is Take 5, a spotlight during staff meetings where educators share effective instructional strategies. These moments not only celebrate staff, but also recognize student engagement by sharing the impact and techniques with colleagues.

On Fridays, staff shout-outs are read over the loudspeaker, giving colleagues a chance to celebrate one another.

Recently, teachers and staff participated in staff wellness where they got creative with an art project, got active with volleyball, enjoyed ‘minute to win it’ games and meditated with yoga. The variety of activities allowed the teachers and staff to recharge in their own way.
