Brushes, Beats and Bonding: Clearspring’s Art Jam Sessions

As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, MCPS is highlighting how Sean Clay, a teacher at Clearspring Elementary School, provides a creative space for other teachers.

Throughout the school year, teachers and staff at Clearspring Elementary School are invited to join Art Jam sessions after school. Hosted by art teacher Sean Clay, the gatherings provide an open, welcoming space for teachers and staff to let their creativity flow.

“Mr. Clay’s Art Jam sessions offer a welcome pause in the day,” said Principal Jessica Bay Graber. “It’s a chance for staff to step away from the usual routine, express themselves creatively and connect with colleagues in a relaxed, meaningful way.”

During each session, Clay plays music, provides supplies and briefly introduces the day’s activity. Most themes align with what students are learning—such as monochromatic painting, pottery or landscape creation.

“These sessions were designed to give staff more opportunities to create for themselves while having more exposure to what students are doing in the art room,” said Clay.

While the concept isn’t new, the sessions offer teachers and staff a chance to get creative and try something different.

“These sessions are all about connection, calm and community,” said Graber. “Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just there to unwind, it's the perfect chance to recharge, bond with colleagues and tap into the healing power of art. It's a true gift for staff well-being!”
