Sligo Middle School Students Shine at First Project SUCCESS Symposium

Students at Sligo Middle School took center stage during the school’s first Project SUCCESS Symposium on April 25, presenting research on topics ranging from space exploration to the impact of writing practice.
Project SUCCESS (Student Unified Curriculum Connecting English, Science, and Social Studies) is an interdisciplinary program in which students are taught all three subjects by the same teacher for four consecutive periods each day. The model is designed to strengthen relationships, improve academic outcomes and reduce opportunity gaps.
“The students were confident, excited and proud to share their work,” said Claire Kapoor, a physical education and health teacher at Sligo.
Principal Peter Crable provided an overview of the program’s history and goals. Teacher Annette Carrion spoke about the growth in student skills and confidence. Parents Nicole Dueffert and Jose Barahona reflected on how the program has impacted their children, and student Enid Holmes shared how the experience changed how she learns and boosted her confidence.
Guests also toured student exhibits that highlighted research, critical thinking and communications skills.
“It was so impressive to see how much they have developed into confident public speakers, proud of their work and comfortable with the material,” said one parent, Morgan Holmes. “I couldn’t help thinking how much it was preparing them for real-world work and life.”
