Draft changes to Board Policy JGA, Student Discipline

From now until February 7, 2022, the Board of Education is seeking comments on proposed amendments to Board Policy JGA, Student Discipline, to provide a philosophy of behavior intervention that is rehabilitative, restorative, educational, and implemented fairly and equitably with clear, appropriate, and consistent expectations and consequences to address student behavior in violation of the Student Code of Conduct in MCPS

Highlights of the changes include the following topics:

  • A new title is proposed:  Policy JGA, Behavior Intervention Safety and Well-being Plan
  • The draft includes updates required in Maryland law requires defines “restorative approaches” as a relationship-focused model that –
  1. is primarily proactive and preventative;
  2. emphasizes building strong relationships and setting clear behavioral expectations that contribute to the school community well-being;
  3. in response to behavior that violates clear behavior expectations, focuses on accountability for any harm done by the problem behavior; and
  4. addresses ways to repair the relationships affected by the problem behavior with the voluntary participation of an individual who was harmed.
