The Student Leadership & Extracurricular Activities Unit aims to provide equitable access to a diverse range of student experiences (leadership, service, and extracurricular programs) in which students develop core competencies, make connections with peers and mentors, and have fun. We seek to support schools in creating a welcoming environment where all students are encouraged to broaden their engagement and prepare them for college, career, and community.
MCPS students can engage and access different experiences through leadership, service, and extracurricular activities. Successful participation in these programs positively engages students in their schools and the greater community. This engagement leads to greater attendance at school and performance and achievement in the classroom.
Students have several opportunities to get involved in district-wide student leadership organizations, serve as a community leader, and share their student voice in MCPS.
MCPS schools offer a plethora of extracurricular activities so students can get involved, discover their passions, and connect with their school community.
Students must earn 75 SSL (Student Service Learning) hours to graduate from high school and can start earning SSL hours the summer after their 5th grade.
MCPS wishes to recognize secondary students' commitment to participating in various MCPS Athletic and Extracurricular Activities. Students are encouraged to engage in more than one activity to create positive relationships with their peers in activities and with adult professionals outside of the school day/core curricular courses. Students will be recognized for various levels of commitment, as outlined below, with the MCPS Certificate of Student Engagement. Students can use this award to supplement their college and job applications.
