"Informing, Educating, and Inspiring Families"

Winter 2025-2026 Parent Academy TO GO

Student, Family, and School Services is very excited to provide "Parent Academy TO GO," a series of virtual presentations for families to participate and view at home.

Parent Academy TO GO is designed to inform and empower families as advocates and partners in their children's education. Workshops provide families with useful information and resources to support their children's academic and emotional well-being, as well as help them to be college and career ready. Through a variety of learning opportunities hosted by MCPS staff and community partners, we hope to strengthen our engagement with families and the community. We recognize that behind every successful student are supportive families, teachers, school staff and community members who take an active role in educating our students.

Stand for Students: What It Takes to Be a Student Board Member

December 3, 6:00-7:00 pm

This presentation offers a comprehensive introduction to the role of the Student Board Member in MCPS, outlining the purpose, responsibilities, and unique opportunities the position provides. It explains how the student member of the board contributes to district-level decision-making, the types of issues they can influence, and the ways they gather student perspectives to ensure authentic representation. Participants learn who is eligible to run, what qualities are helpful for candidates, and what students should consider before entering the race. The session also walks through the full election process, from nomination, required application materials, and campaign guidelines to voting procedures and oversight, while clarifying which students can vote and how the district ensures fair, accessible participation. A clear timeline highlights key deadlines, the length of the term, and what happens after election results are finalized. The presentation explores what voters typically look for in candidates, the expectations placed on the elected student member, and how the district maintains equity throughout the process. Families receive guidance on how to support students who are running or voting, including strategies for fostering leadership, managing time, and encouraging thoughtful civic engagement.
